Optimizing Cloud Migration: iVision Consulting’s Automation-Driven Approach to Secure and Efficient Operations

Cyber Resilience

The Challenge

A federal civilian agency ran several critical applications in on-premises data centers managed by different divisions within the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO). The agency chose to migrate these applications to an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) environment, in part to streamline operations and maintenance of the Oracle databases on which the applications relied. In addition to improving the operational efficiency of its applications, the agency wanted to improve the availability and reliability of its applications and hosting infrastructure. Within the agency’s cloud migration strategy, OCIO also wanted to establish a reference architecture to ensure that the data and software programs associated with all its applications were consistently managed, monitored, and protected.

The Solution

Working in collaboration with the agency’s system owners, iVision Consulting first performed a requirements analysis and an architecture assessment to determine the functional and technical requirements and identify the appropriate services to be provisioned for the migrated applications – including virtual machines, autonomous Oracle databases, Oracle Cloud Guard, and backup services for compute and database instances. During the application migration, iVision Consulting identified processes and supporting services that could be configured for automated operations, including security monitoring, configuration validation, and backup and recovery. Enabling automated operations in cloud reduced the IT personnel and time required to maintain the applications and enhanced cyber resiliency by ensuring that backups were captured consistently and made available for recovery if needed.

Outcomes

  • Application availability increased to greater than 99% uptime.
  • Automated backups written for 100% of database and virtual machine instances.
  • Reduced recovery time objective (RTO) for disaster recovery of applications running in OCI.
